State police release finding in fatal accident investigation

MANOR TWP, Armstrong County — The investigation into the cause of a head-on accident that killed three people early Sunday morning has determined which driver was traveling in the wrong lane.

Gregory Johns, 46, of Worthington, who was killed in the crash, was determined to be driving his Chrysler 200 northbound in the southbound lane on Route 28/66, according to a news release from state police in Kittanning.

The other vehicle, a Subaru Outback, was going the proper way — southbound in the southbound lane. It is undetermined why Johns was in the wrong lane, and the investigation is ongoing, according to the release.

Investigators would not say if they suspect the involvement of alcohol or drugs. Results of toxicology tests will take several more weeks to be reported to police.

The driver of the Subaru, Alex Davis, 21, of McGrann, and one passenger, Francis Danahey Jr., 27, of Verona, Allegheny County, also were pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger of the Subaru, Michael Danahey, 26, of Kittanning, was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh with severe injuries. The hospital on Tuesday afternoon listed his condition as critical.

Two people in a Dodge Caravan also were injured when the minivan struck one of the first two vehicles while it was still on the road.
