ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Slippery Rock High graduate Jence Rhoads scored four points and added a team-high five assists to key Vanderbilt University's 64-46 victory over West Virginia University in the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament Monday.
Rhoads, a starting freshman, was 1-of-2 from the floor and sank both free throws for the Commodores (28-6), who play Maryland (32-3) in the regional semifinals in Spokane, Wash. at a time to be determined.
In a 75-47 victory over Montana in the opening round last weekend, Rhoads had two points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists in 27 minutes.
For the season, Rhoads is averaging 3.7 points, 3.4 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game.
ADAMS TWP — Mars senior forward Ian Finney was named to the second team of the MSA Sports All-Icers Team Monday.Finney finished fourth in the PIHL Class A scoring race, leading the Planets with 61 points (26 goals and 35 assists) in 22 games.
OXFORD, Ohio — Grove City College junior Tim Whitbeck of Saegertown earned his eighth NCAA All-America honor Saturday by placing 10th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.35 seconds at the national meet at Miami University.Whitbeck posted a time of 45.55 in Saturday's preliminaries., which placed him 15th overall. In the consolation final, however, Whitbeck moved up five spots to second place in the race.
SLIPPERYROCK — Slippery Rock University's Jennifer Hansen and Whitney Hendershot were named as PSAC women's indoor track and field special award recipients.Hansen was named Field Athlete of the Year while Hendershot was Rookie of the Year. Also, John Papa was named men's Coach of the Year.Hansen, a pole vaulter who won last spring's outdoor Athlete of the Year, won the PSAC Championships with a school-record 13 feet, 1½ inches, then placed third in the Division IInational meetHendershot, a multievent performer, won the conference title and was fifth in the national meet in the high jump. She set a school record and tied the PSAC mark with a leap of 5-9¾ at the PSACchampionships and 5-7¼ in the NCAAmeet.Papa led SRU to its first men's indoor track and field crown. It marked Papa's 11th Coach of the Year honor overall since being hired by SRU in 1986.
