The Butler Cubs 15-and-under girls AAU basketball team won the championship at the "Future Stars" Tournament at Edinboro University last weekend.
The team defeated the Beaver County All-Stars in the title game, 70-59.
During the weekend of April 16-17, the squad captured the championship game of a Tournament held at Indiana University (Pa.).
Team members include: Rachel Barry, Jenna Bodkin, Danielle Dado, Lyndsy Day, Brittany Foust, Karissa King, Erica Miller, Allyson Kepple and Alyssa Young.
Sarah Johnston, a senior softball player at Allegheny College, has been named a recipient of the North Coast Athletic Conference's Scholar-Athlete Award.Johnston is a 2001 graduate of Butler High School.She is a four-year starter and one of three captains for the Gators, who will carry an 18-16 record into the NCAC Tournament. Johnston currently leads the team in hits (37) and runs scored (25).In the classroom, her GPA is just shy of 4.0 and she has been nominated for ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America Softball Team.Johnston will graduate May 15 with a degree in history.
Penn State-Behrend recently announced the recipients of its annual athletic awards. The list included seven Butler County products.They include:Knoch graduate Elaine Voltz, MVP in women's volleyball. Teammate Ashley Ordy, a Butler graduate, the leadership/sportsmanship award.Butler graduate Jeremiah Guthrie, most improved in men's tennis.Butler graduate Luke Goldner, the leadership/sportsmanship award in men's soccer.Seneca Valley graduates Josh Loaney and Josh Hull earned the MVP and most improved award, respectively, in men's golf.Butler graduate Leisl Soergel, the rookie of the year award in women's cross country.
Chris Gallagher, a 2003 graduate of Mars High School, has earned the Cornell University football team's "Every Step, Every Rep" award after his performance in spring football practices.Gallagher, who has moved from cornerback to wide receiver, has also been named to the school's Wall of Honor after his performance in combine drills and strength and conditioning.
