HARRISBURG — Three bills to change how child abuse investigations are handled were closer to becoming law following favorable votes in the state House of Representatives.

The House voted overwhelmingly to send the Senate the proposals, which are among the legislation under consideration since the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal raised concerns about the adequacy of state laws to protect children.

One bill would establish procedures to report child abuse online or by e-mail and require those who must report suspected abuse to inform their supervisors and call the ChildLine hot line.

The second bill would require determinations of child abuse to be approved by county child protective services administrators and the agency's lawyer.

The third would broaden how school personnel must handle abuse cases.

HARRISBURG — A bill on its way to Gov. Tom Corbett's desk would prevent the Pennsylvania Game Commission from confiscating swine from private land and allow swine hunting preserves to operate under the Department of Agriculture's rules.The Senate approved the bill, 32-16, on Thursday. It passed the House earlier in the week.The bill's sponsor, Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, said the future of two private hunting preserves in his northern Pennsylvania district was at stake.The game commission had argued that swine, or wild boars, are dangerous if they escape, and can multiply quickly in the wild. Critics say they pose a threat to wildlife, farm animals and crops.

PHILADELPHIA — A bicyclist was critically injured after he was found impaled on a fence, police said.Police found the man about 2 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call that led them to Fairmount Park. There is a dip in a section of the road there, police said, and the man may have lost control and fell.When police found the man, his chest had been pierced by the fence.

PITTSBURGH — An 11-year-old girl from Shaler is the national marbles champion.Emily Cavacini won the girls championship Thursday at the 90th National Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, N.J.The four-day tournament featured 26 boys and 26 girls who competed to knock marbles out of a circle.Emily has been playing marbles for about four years. She’s a fifth-grader at Shaler Elementary School and won the Allegheny County Marbles Tournament on June 1.
