How many of you are apartment renters? How many of you are low income and feel trapped in an apartment because you can't afford to move? I don't qualify for HUD or any other kind of financial aid even though I earn less than $20,000 a year. For most of my 52 years I have rented from a relative. She is elderly now and her son has taken over the task of interviewing prospective tenants. Never does a back ground check or credit check. If the person has the money, they get the apartment. It doesn't matter that they are drug users/dealers. It doesn't matter that they are loud, rude, disrespectful, and cause problems with the other tenants. As long as they have cash in hand, that's all that matters to Mr. Manager. Mrs. Landlady is kept in the dark about the problems with the building itself and the issues that the long-time, respectable tenants are having because of the "gimme the money" attitude of Mr. Manager. For some reason, Mr. Manager is reluctant to confront these bad tenants and enforce the rules of the house. His attitude seems to be out of sight out of mind. He doesn't have to live here so he tends to ignore the problems. The police will not do anything about the fighting, yelling drug dealers because they say they have to be able to hear the fighting from outside in order to enforce any laws. Over the years I have lived here I have paid almost $100,000 in rent. I have taken care of the inside of my apartment as well as the yard outside. I help Mrs. Landlady all I can with many things she is not able to do for herself. None of this matters. I love my apartment and truly cannot afford to move or I would have been out of here the first time Mr. Manager rented to drug dealers. But, like I said, I am trapped because of my low income. Why does it have to be this way? We should be able to live in a safe, quiet building without drug dealers running through the house, fighting yelling, leaving doors unlocked so anyone off the street can make their way into the building.This is just WRONG!
