High-tech Seneca Valley to unveil mobile app

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School District next month will unveil a new mobile application that will give users information about school matters from school delays and cancellations to menus and school events.

Linda Andreassi, director of communications, said the district has been creating the application for several months and finally will be ready to unveil it next month.

Once the app is in use, Seneca Valley will no longer use Twitter for getting the word out about school delays or cancellations, Andreassi said, and will instead use the new app exclusively.

This was done in part to curb instances of students creating fake Twitter accounts and purposely spreading false information regarding delays or closings. However, Andreassi added the new app already was going to supplant Twitter in that regard anyway.

“Twitter is a very widely used social medium, and my fear is that (students creating fake accounts) would grow,” she said. “We wanted to put that to an end, and the easiest way to do that was to stop using Twitter as a way of notifying parents about delays and cancellations.”

Andreassi noted the school district will still use Twitter for other functions, just not for weather-related delays. She also said the new mobile app will provide push notifications for users that will pop up when any delay or closure is imminent.

But she noted the new mobile app will be so much more than just weather-related. Parents will be able to pick from 12 tabs on the mobile site and will be a click away from seeing school menus, student grades, the district’s calendar and other school events.

“We’re very excited about,” she added. “It’s a very user-friendly site.”

Andreassi said school officials will unveil the mobile app at the April 13 school board meeting. It is scheduled to go online the next day.
