The low temperatures in Butler County are expected to continue, and helped produce the fluffy, dry snow seen Tuesday morning, Jan. 16, according to the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh.

A wind chill advisory will be in effect starting late Tuesday, as well, according to meteorologist Lee Hendricks.

Only an inch of snow is expected to accumulate Tuesday morning, Hendricks said. He explained that flurries are predicted to stop around 10 or 11 a.m.

The flakes are so light you can move them with one breath, he said.

“The air is very cold, and very cold air doesn’t hold a lot of moisture,” Hendricks said.

Nevertheless, Hendricks said the system could hold some bands of heavier snow, covering the roads.

Plow trucks could be seen scraping snow away and distributing salt along snow-covered roads Tuesday morning, but despite the efforts, traffic flowed slowly and many school districts closed or delayed classes for the day.

The cold will be worse than the snow, he said, as Butler County is under a wind chill advisory from Tuesday evening into Wednesday afternoon.

Hendricks advised temperatures will reach a high of 18 degrees Tuesday, but drop to a low of 4 degrees at night. Accompanied by 10 to 15 mph winds, residents could experience temperatures of -13 degrees.

The National Weather Service of Pittsburgh advised certain vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, those with chronic illness, newborns, and those who work outdoors take special precautions when outdoors during the advisory period.

The service also advised the use of hats, gloves, and scarves to conserve body heat when traveling outside.
