ALIQUIPPA — A firefighter is recovering from a broken elbow sustained when the ladder on a fire truck collapsed as he battled a blaze at a garage and towing company.

Officials say Capt. James Pennington was hurt during a fire Sunday in Aliquippa.

Witnesses say the ladder extended from the truck buckled and collapsed, sending Pennington to the ground.

LANGHORNE — More than 600 teachers at a large suburban Philadelphia school district are walking off the job.Neshaminy School District's teachers planned to begin a strike this morning after working without a contract since 2008.The teachers in the Bucks County district haven't received any pay increases since the last contract expired but they pay nothing toward their health insurance premiums.

QUAKERTOWN — Every year, warmer weather means love — even for salamanders.The first mild, rainy evening of late winter or early spring often sends hundreds of the amphibians in search of love. Trouble is, the tiny animals often venture onto rural roads to try to get from one swampy site to another, and that makes them vulnerable to traffic.For the past few years, environmentalist Devich Farbotnik has been stationing himself on Upper Bucks County roads running through the 518-acre Quakertown Swamp to stop cars so that groups of the lovesick salamanders can get across the road safely.
