James “Rusty Jones” M. Hammitt

James “Rusty Jones” M. Hammitt, 92, of Franklin Park died Thursday.

James was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Pittsburgh, to the late Isaac and Ruth Fennell Hammitt.

James proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a rifleman, receiving a Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars.

He was an automotive and small engine mechanic, a longtime member of the Franklin Park Volunteer Fire Department and an avid banjo player.

James was the beloved husband of the late Ruth A. (Barnes) Hammitt; the loving father of James E. (Ruth) Hammitt, Donald M. (Gerri) Hammitt and the late David W. Hammitt; brother of the late Richard Hammitt and Ruth Ann Barnes; the dear grandfather of Audra (David) Blackson, Jeffrey Hammitt, Cory Schraeder, Colton Martin and the late David M. Hammitt; and the proud great-grandfather of Hunter, Nicholas, Hailey and Gavin Blackson.

HAMMITT — Family will welcome friends of James “Rusty Jones” M. Hammitt, who died Thursday, March 9, 2017, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Schellhaas & Sons Funeral Home, 1600 Stone Mansion Drive, Sewickley.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Mt. Royal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franklin Park V.F.D., 2360 Rochester Road, Sewickley, PA 15143.
