Geisler grabs win in opener

BUFFALO TWP — Lynn Geisler is doing pretty well for openers.

The Cranberry Township driver of the No. 1C Late Model found victory lane on the first Fab Four race show of the season Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.

Geisler's win was his 107th Late Model feature victory at the Sarver track and pulled him within 10 of Bob Wearing Sr.'s division record. It also was Geisler's first win at Lernerville since July 7, 2006.

Geisler won the season opener at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway April 12 after failing to win there in 2007 as well.

"This is a confidence builder, that's for sure," Geisler said. "I hope there's a lot more coming."

Geisler started the feature in the front row, led for four laps, then fell to third on a restart. He regained the lead on Lap 13 and kept it, holding off a surge from defending track champion Alex Ferree of Saxonburg. Ferree started 11th and moved into second by Lap 17.

"I knew he was there," Geisler said. "Lapped traffic forced me to run on the top of the track. I prefer to run on the bottom, but the car was pretty good up top, too."

In other features, Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo won the Sprint event, Kevin Bolland of New Brighton claimed the Modified feature and Joe Kelley of Greensburg won the Street Stock event.

Kevin Schaeffer looked in mid-season form in the Sprint race, then got bumped off his game.

The No. 9 Sprint car driver from Kittanning began the race alongside Lynch, owner of the most Sprint feature wins in Lernerville history, but he led the first 15 laps by a straightaway's distance at times.

But Schaeffer's car bumped into the rear of Dan Shetler's as the latter was heading to the pits.

As Schaeffer struggled to regain speed, Lynch zipped past him and cruised to victory from there. The win was Lynch's 89th Sprint triumph at Lernerville and his 90th win here overall, including one victory in the Modified category.

Lynch now sits alone in fourth place on the track's all-time overall win list, trailing only Bob Wearing Sr., Lou Blaney and Geisler.

"That's quite a crowd to be involved with," Lynch said. "That many wins means you're either old or you're winning a lot. I think both are happening to me."

Schaeffer said he had no chance to avoid running into Shetler.

"I came around the bend and I guess he was heading into the pits. I didn't even have a chance to turn the wheel," Schaeffer said. "It took me a while to get it back together. I was mad. I kept telling myself to calm down, but that's easier said than done."

To make matters worse, Bob Felmlee nipped Schaeffer at the wire for second place.

"It was still a good night," Schaeffer said.

In the Modified race, Bolland grabbed the lead from Mars driver Tom Winkle on an 18th-lap restart. The victory was Bolland's 38th Modified win at Lernerville. He ranks sixth on the track's all-time Modified win list.

Del Rougeux Jr. wound up second with Winkle getting third.

Kelley's Pure Stock win was his 25th at Lernerville, third on the track's all-time list in that division. Kelley is a six-time track champion here, last winning the Pure Stock points crown in 2004.

Notes: There were 115 cars in the pits. … Pure Stock driver Shawn Thorn of Murrysville saw his No. 12 car catch in fire off Turn 2 during his heat race, bringing out the red flag. He was unhurt. … Eric Piotrowski of Cranberry Township won the Pure Stock B-Main for his first checkered flag at Lernerville. … The All-Star Sprint series comes to Lernerville next Friday. Modifieds will not run, but points will count in the other divisions.
