Samuel E. Mathias Jr.

Samuel E. Mathias Jr., 81, of Slippery Rock, passed away Thursday afternoon at VNA Hospice.

Born on Oct. 5, 1935, in Berlin, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel E. Sr. and Edna Mae Baker Mathias.

Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 61 wonderful years, the former Mary Louise Sarver, who he married on Oct. 8, 1955.

After more than 32 years of working, Samuel retired as a postal worker for the United States Postal Service. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force.

An active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Samuel performed with the church choir. He enjoyed leatherwork and was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping.

Samuel also loved spending time with his family and his pets. In addition to his wife, Samuel is survived by his children, Samuel A. Mathias and wife Wanda L. of Portersville and Alan Lee Mathias of Slippery Rock; grandchildren, Danny Mathias and Amber Custer and husband Matthew; and great-grandchild, Kaydance.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Dively.

MATHIAS — Visitation for Samuel E. Mathias Jr., who died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St., New Castle.Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday for a funeral service at Trinity Lutheran Church, 120 Sunset Drive, Butler, officiated by Pastor Joel Benson.Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.decarbofuneralhome.com.
