YMCA supports choice to stay healthy

Heidi Nicholle Bowser

We know that the YMCA serves a vital function in Butler County, including facilitating the physical and mental well-being of the members of this community. The challenge has been implementing state health mandates that have been updated many times since March when we fi rst faced the realities of COVID-19.

Health Department guidelines make the wearing of masks and face coverings while exercising indoors mandatory.

Communication outlining the new mandate was sent out to all YMCA members, and we are doing our best to enforce this policy. This has been a diffi cult transition for some of our regular exercisers, and wearing a mask during intense exercise can be uncomfortable. Still, we have all faced the realization that there are many areas in life where we have been forced to adapt, and as wellness leaders, we must set the tone.

I think it's important for people to know that while we cannot ensure the complete health and safety of any individual, we do feel a responsibility to all members who walk through our doors. Choosing to stay healthy during this pandemic is a choice, and we are here to help our members reach their wellness goals. Even now, regular exercise and safer social interactions are possible, and definitely help people feel happier and healthier! Our members look to us for support in a multitude of ways, and that's what makes my job incredibly gratifying.

We are so grateful that we are helping to serve his vibrant community!

Heidi Nicholls Bowser is director of membership and healthy living for Butler YMCA.
