“Black Water Reflections” by Glenn Thompson of Butler.
Butler artist wins N.C. photography contest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A photographer from Butler has won a photography contest inspired by “Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light,” an exhibition of Adams’ photographs on view exclusively at Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem.

Glenn Thompson’s “Black Water Reflections” received the most votes of three finalists in the “The Modern Landscape: Black and White Photography Contest,” a competition that celebrated the American landscape exemplified by the work of Adams.

Rob Fowler, president of Modern Automotive which is the sponsor of the Adams exhibit, made the announcement May 18 at the museum.

More than 300 individuals submitted photographs to the competition between Jan. 1 and March 10.

A panel of three jurors, all professional photographers and artists, reviewed the entries and selected three finalists: “Mesa Arch Sunrise” by J.J. Raia of Cary, N.C., who received third place; “Steadfast” by Sharon Canter of High Point, N.C., who received second place; and Thompson’s winning “Black Water Reflections.”

Finalists were on view for a public voting period at several locations through May 13, and more than 1,100 votes were submitted.

The exhibition “Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light” will be on view at Reynolda House Museum through July 17.

One of the world’s most widely celebrated photographers, Adams (1902-1984) created images that illustrate the American West.

The 37 photographs by Adams in the exhibit have never been on view together, and Reynolda House is the exhibition’s only venue. The debut of “Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light” coincides with the centennial of the National Park Service, which marks its 100th anniversary in August 2016.
