The polka is a fast, lively dance familiar throughout Europe and America. It originated in the mid-19th century in Bohemia and remains a common genre in Czech, Slovakian and Polish folk music.

The name comes from the Czech word pùlka, which means "little half" and refers to the half steps done in the dance. Polkas usually have a 2/4 time signature.

Contemporary U.S. polka styles vary according to their origins and instruments used to accompany dancers.
