Eno

Gerald M. Eno, 90, a recent resident of NewHaven Court in Butler, passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler.

He was born May 26, 1922, in Honesdale, Pa., to the late Daniel M. Eno and Laura Grazier Eno.

He grew up on Beech Grove Road near the Eno family homestead, which was established in 1838 after his ancestors moved there from Colebrook, Conn. He attended Honesdale High School, then earned his bachelors and masters degrees from Penn State.

Mr. Eno was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a lieutenant in World War II, from 1944 to 1946, mostly in northern Italy. He served again in 1951 as a captain in the Korean War.

He taught general science, physics, general math, algebra and driver's education at Honesdale High School until his retirement in 1982. He made a point of establishing a rapport with each of his students.

Mr. Eno was a 50-year member of the United Methodist Church in Honesdale and was active in the Upper Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. He served on the board of Wayne County Children and Youth Agency, and was active in the American Legion, the Beech Grove Grange, the APEX Philosophical and Chowder Society and was a manager and president in the Honesdale Little League. He enjoyed farming, golf, bowling, stamp collecting and traveling to visit family, national parks, Iceland and Nova Scotia.

Mr. Eno is survived by his wife, Grace (Weidaw) Eno, who he married Dec. 9, 1943; two sons, Daniel Eno and his wife, Christina, of Dover, Pa., and Timothy Eno and his wife Geri of Batesville, Ark.; three daughters, Debbie (Eno) Hammond and her husband Barry of Butler, Marty (Eno) Tollefsen of New Castle, Ky., and Becky Eno of Rutland, Vt.; five grandchildren, Tracey Eno, John Eno, Alison Sprankle, Albert Tollefsen and Andrew Tollefsen; six great-grandchildren, Krissy, Ella and Abby Sprankle, and Ashley Hall and Andrew and Alden Tollefsen; one brother, Alfred W. Eno of Johnson City, N.Y.; two sisters, Dorothy (Eno) Samson of Lake Ariel, Pa., and Nancy (Eno) Thomas of Neffs, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford G. and Robert G. Eno, and one sister, Alice (Eno) Dreyer.
