Events continue at DCNR parks

The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources invites residents to continue patronizing Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks as the temperatures drop.

A Winter Tree ID will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at McConnells Mill in the Kildoo picnic pavilion.

Participants will learn the basics of tree identification in the winter and what trees are best for the backyard and go on a guided walk using forestry techniques and tools to identify trees, like observing branching, bark and last year’s leaves.

All ages are welcome. Those attending should dress for the weather and bring a snack and drink. The event will be canceled in the event of severe or dangerous weather.

A Winter Walk will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Moraine. The walk will begin at Pleasant Valley on the South Shore.

Guests will walk the Pleasant Valley Trail, which winds past the sled-riding hill and near the Bear Run launch area before joining the Sunken Garden Trail to make a loop of about 2 miles.

The walk will offer views of Lake Arthur, open fields and quiet woodlands. The walk is open to all ages, and friendly dogs on leashes are welcome.

Those planning to attend should wear sturdy shoes or boots and dress for the weather. The walk will be canceled in the event of severe or dangerous weather.

A First Day Hike will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, beginning at Pleasant Valley on the South Shore.

Participants can ring in the new year with a 2-mile hike on the Pleasant Valley Trail.

Registration is required at events.dcnr.pa.gov/event/first_day_hike_555. All ages and friendly dogs on leashes are welcome. The event will be canceled in the case of severe or dangerous weather.

Those who need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability can contact the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks at 888-PA-PARKS (voice); 717-558-2710 (local or international voice); or 711 (AT&T Relay Services). With at least three days notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs.
