SRU women stun Mercyhurst, 54-53

Chere' Marshall sank a jumper with three seconds remaining Saturday, giving the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team a 54-53 upset win at Mercyhurst.

Marshall scored seven points in the final minute of the game. The Rock trailed 53-49 before she canned a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left. Mercyhurst turned the ball over with 15 seconds to play.

SRU (5-16, 2-6) had lost nine of 10 games before Saturday.

Marshall had 13 points and two blocked shots in the contest. Grove City High graduate Julie Molloy had 12 points and eight rebounds, Grace Palucis 12 points and five assists.

Butler graduate Amy Achesinski paced the Lakers (12-8, 4-4) with 17 points. Samantha Loadman added 12 points and 15 rebounds.

In men's action:

Mercyhurst College outscored SRU 40-19 over the final 14 minutes to come away with a 71-58 victory Saturday.

SRU (13-8, 2-6), which was held to its lowest point total of the season, held a 39-31 lead before the closing run.

At one point during that span, The Rock was held scoreless for six minutes.

Jabril Bailey scored a game-high 20 points and blocked three shots while Maron Brown added 16 points and seven rebounds.

Michael Evans Jr. chipped in with 12 points, all in the first half, and Andre Tarver had a team-high eight rebounds.

The loss was the third consecutive for SRU and eighth in the past 11 after a school-record 10-0 start.

SRU's teams travel to Gannon Wednesday night.

At the Division II Challenge at the University of Findlay (Oh.), select members of the SRU squads competed.Kevin Jewel placed third in the 800 (1 minute, 57.04 seconds) and Phil Rector followed in seventh place (1:58.04).On the women's side, Tiffany Tedesco led the way with a fifth-place showing in the 200 (25.78) as well as a member of the fifth-place 1,600 relay team (4:01.71, where she was joined by Rachel Knapp, Amanda Seigworth and Allison Smith).The Rock competed in the Jim Wuske Invitational Saturday at Mount Union College, where SRU's Jen Hansen won the pole vault by more than a foot.Kim Stitt placed second in the shot put and fourth in the triple jump. Jessica Ferrick was sixth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump.Other Rock placers were Jen Pace (second in 3,000 meters), Julianna Guido (fifth in 400), Jayme Stanek (eighth in 400), Taylor McCracken (sixth in 200) and Julie Hubbard (seventh in mile).On the men's side, Terrece Draper won the triple jump and Kris Stalma the 55-meter hurdles.Other Rock placers were Shawn Vanderbrook (fifth in triple jump), Dan Hedglin (fourth in 55-meter hurdles), Matt Antis (second in pole vault), Tom McKinley (eighth in pole vault), Bill Nguyen (third in long jump), Draper (fifth) and Vanderbrook (sixth), Brady Wert (third in high jump) and Butler graduate Mason McLaughlin (eighth in 200).
