Woman seriously injured, man hurt in motorcycle crash
WINFIELD TWP — A man and woman were injured, at least one seriously, Sunday night when the motorcycle they were riding struck a deer and crashed on Winfield Road, authorities said.
Michelle Lee Miller, 44, of Clay Township, a passenger on the cycle, was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with head injuries believed to be life-threatening.
The driver, Thomas A. McKee Sr., 58, of Clearfield Township, was also taken to the hospital with injuries described as “moderate,” according to a state police report.
Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
Troopers said the couple was eastbound on Winfield Road about 8:50 p.m. when a deer ran in front of their 2010 Harley Davidson, forcing McKee to lay down the cycle at the intersection of Cornplanter Road.
Jim Sloane and his wife were sitting on their porch when the motorcycle rode by. Seconds later, they heard a crash.
Sloane ran down and saw the wreck. Neither of the riders was moving. He called 911.
“His body was in the center of the road,” Sloane said of McKee. “Hers was in the (westbound) lane.”
McKee eventually came to but he was disoriented.
“He kept asking, ‘What happened? What happened?’”
The Winfield Township Volunteer Fire Departments and Saxonburg Ambulance were called and immediately tended to both victims.
Firefighters set up a landing zone for the helicopter at a field on Winfield Road.
McKee and Miller were taken to Allegheny General Hospital. Their conditions were not known this morning.
Sloane said he found the deer carcass on the side of the road.
Police said they continue to investigate the crash.
