Washington County mother to get life in girl's murder
WASHINGTON, Pa. — A Western Pennsylvania woman will spend life in prison for throwing her newborn daughter in the trash and telling her then-husband to dispose of the bag, which she said was filled with Thanksgiving leftovers.
Jessica Rizor, 31, of Washington, Pa., was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence, as well as concealing the death of a child and abuse of a corpse.
Her attorney, Robert Brady, said he will appeal because a Washington County judge wouldn't let his expert psychologists testify. The witnesses would have showed Rizor suffered from "depersonalization disorder," which is prevalent in women who do not recognize they are pregnant, Brady said.
Authorities contend Rizor purposely concealed her pregnancy and gave birth in the bathroom of a home she shared with her then-husband and mother on Nov. 26, 2004. The husband found the baby in the garbage after Rizor told him to take out a trash bag, which she said was full of Thanksgiving leftovers.
Rizor was charged with murder because an autopsy showed the baby was born alive but suffocated in the trash bag.
Rizor told investigators she believed the child was stillborn and maintained throughout their investigation that she did not know she was pregnant until she gave birth. Rizor told police she thought she was having menstrual cramps the morning the child was born.
