ADAMS TWP — The effort to create a multi-municipal parks and recreation group in the Mars School District is over.

The project sputtered to a stop at the study group's meeting Wednesday night, one day after the Adams Township supervisors sent the group a letter stating they would no longer participate in it.

All but one of the Adams supervisors attended July's study group meeting to relay their concerns about a potential agreement document created in June.

Adams supervisors Tom Franceschina, Ed Vogel, Russ Ford and chairman Donald Aiken told the committee then that they were against forming a new commission because it would add another layer of government to the area. They also disagreed with the five-year duration of the contract and the ability of a parks and recreation director to spend up to $100,000 on materials, equipment and other items for programs.

On Tuesday, Mars School Board President Kimberly Geyer, who initiated the regional recreation effort, received a letter from Adams stating the supervisors are no longer interested in the group.

At Wednesday's meeting, JoAnn Rogers, Mars Borough Councilwoman, told the group Mars also decided against further participation.

Without the cooperation of a majority of municipalities, it was agreed the project should end.
