PITTSBURGH — The Penguins signed veteran goalie Ty Conklin as the backup to starter Marc-Andre Fleury.

Conklin, 31, split last season between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Buffalo Sabres, finishing with a 3.34 goals against average and a .897 save percentage.

The 6-0, 185-pound native of Anchorage, Alaska, has appeared in 76 career NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, Columbus and Buffalo. For his career, he has a record of 30-24-7, a 2.65 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage.

Jocelyn Thibault, Fleury's backup last year, signed as a free agent with Buffalo earlier this month.

FLORENCE, Ky. — Thursday's game pitting the Slippery Rock Sliders and host Florence Freedom was rained out.There will be a doubleheader Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m., and both games are full seven-inning matchups.

BAKERSTOWN — John Hook of Cabot finished in first place in the boys 17-and-18 division of the King's Family Restaurants Junior Golf Tournament at Pittsburgh North Golf Course Thursday.Hook fired a one-over-par 73, winning by three shots.In the girls 16-to-18 division, Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock was second with an 84, one shot behind champion Haygen Mowden of Martins Ferry, Ohio.Mara Shingleton of Butler carded a 98 to place second in the girls 14-and-15 division.

GREENVILLE — Slippery Rock High School graduate Adam Brydon will play baseball at Thiel College.The son of Joseph and Denise Brydon of Slippery Rock, he plans to major in pre-physical therapy.

METARIE, La. — Zach Jackson struck out nine batters over six innings, but was charged with the loss as the Nashville Sounds, the Class AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, lost to New Orleans 4-1 on Wednesday.Jackson (9-5) allowed four runs on six hits and walked three. For the season, Jackson, a Seneca Valley graduate, has a 4.79 ERA with 79 strikeouts and 45 walks over 114X\c innings.
