MCCANDLESS — Allegheny County police say a suburban Pittsburgh police officer fatally shot a man early today after police responded to a call that someone fired a shot through a pizza shop window.

Police Assistant Superintendent James Morton confirmed the man was dead after being shot shortly before 4 a.m. But Morton stopped short of confirming that the man shot was the same one suspected of shooting at the pizza shop.

Police began searching a wooded area nearby after someone reportedly fired at least one shot through the window at Bellisario's Restaurant in McCandless about 2 a.m.

County police say an officer from neighboring Hampton Township shot the man as part of that search.

County police plan to release more details at a news conference this morning.
