Perfecting perfection

Tuesday night Strikes and Spares League bowler Charlie Kremer has started the season by rolling a perfect game in three successive weeks at Family Bowlaway. He is averaging 250 through nine games.

BUTLER TWP — Charlie Kremer is having a house built in Butler and plans to relocate soon.

His bowling game is already here.

Kremer, 32, of Harmar Township, is in his second year as a member of the Tuesday night Strikes and Spares League at Family Bowlaway. He averaged 217 in that circuit last season.

He’s blowing that away so far this year.

Kremer is averaging 250 through the league’s first three bowling nights and rolled his third perfect game in as many weeks this past Tuesday.

Kremer has no idea how many 300-games he’s bowled in his lifetime, “maybe 20 or so,” but admitted he’s never had two in two weeks to begin a season, let alone three.

“I’ve had years when I’ve bowled three or four perfect games ... never a start like this,” he said.

He is dominating a league filled with dominant bowlers.

League secretary Curt Dorcy indicated that 22 of the 100 bowlers in the 14-team circuit carry average above 200.

“We had seven 300’s bowled in the league last year,” Dorcy said. “We’ve had a 288 this year, a 279. But I don’t know if we’ve ever had a bowler get off to a start like this.

“Charlie, Mike Dunkerly, Mike Hilliard, they’re the best bowlers in this league. And we’ve got a lot of the best bowlers in the county.”

Kremer has put together three-game series of 739, 736 and 777 in the Strikes and Spares League through three weeks. He has bowled in as many as three leagues a year, but is only bowling in one this year.

“I bowled with Steve Tuzikow in Deer Lakes and he told me he was putting a team in this league, so I came up here,” Kremer said. “We’ve been bowling together for years.

“His dad and my dad used to hang out together. The Kremers and Tuzikows have been together for a long time.”

Kremer has been bowling since age 2 and grew up participating in Saturday morning youth leagues. He rolled his first 300 at approximately 14 years of age and has rolled four 800-series in his lifetime, the highest being 837.

While he’s cashed at national tournaments and placed third in all events in the Butler County tourney last year, he said he doesn’t do a lot of tournament bowling.

“I bowl for fun, to have a good time,” Kremer said. “Yeah, this is a competitive league with good bowlers, but that doesn’t change my approach or my game at all.”

Nothing seems to do that.

“Charlie’s approach is always the same,” Dorcy said. “He doesn’t speed up or slow down. He always throws the ball at the same speed.

“He’s just so fluid, so smooth. He doesn’t change anything.”

Kremer doesn’t expect this run of 300’s to stay the same. Maintaining a 250 average isn’t too likely, either.

But he doesn’t mind living in the moment. Kremer’s 10-month old daughter gave him a kiss for good luck before he left for work on Tuesday.

“It’s all good right now,” he said.
