The Slippery Rock Sliders have signed former Slippery Rock University shortstop Phil Butch to a contract. He joined the team Tuesday night in Washington, Pa.

Butch batted .328 with 21 stolen bases this spring for The Rock. He batted .379 with 34 stolen bases last season.

The Sliders also re-signed catcher Mike Darrah, who batted .368 with 16 doubles, six homers and 36 RBIfor West Liberty (W.Va.)State College this spring. They released catcher Travis Chapman and third baseman Michael Richardson.

The Seneca Valley baseball team will face WPIAL champ Peters Township in the PIAAClass AAAA semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa.The Seneca Valley softball team will face Latrobe, which defeated the Raiders in the WPIALClass AAAA championship game, at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairhaven Park in Robinson Township.

John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred Golf Course fired a two-day total 144 to capture the Club Car/GC Supply Inc. Tri-State Senior Open Tuesday at New Castle Country Club.Aubrey fired a 68 on Monday, then a 76 on Tuesday for the victory over runners-up Roy Vucinich of Allegheny County Club and John Mazza of Fox Run Golf Course (148).Ron Milanovich of St. Jude Golf Club finished eighth (78-76-154) while Butler's Jon Pratkanis finished sixth (74-76-150) in the amateur event, eight strokes behind winner Jon Smarrelli, who was also the overall Tri-State Open winner.Travis Dickson of Treesdale Golf and Country Club (71-73-144) finished in a four-way tie for second place with Aubrey.Joe Boros of Treesdale was tied for 10th (148) and Rob McClelland of Butler Country Club tied for 15th (149).
