Freeport Theatre ready for 'Battle'

Preparing for a scene in the Freeport Theatre Festival show “Battle of Bushy Run” are, from left, Courtney Riffer as Capt. Campbell, Butler attorney Alex Lindsay as Col. Bouquet, Rik Billock as Gen. Amherst and Michael Huston as a Highlander.

ALLEGHENY TWP, Westmoreland County — Freeport Theatre Festival opens “Battle of Bushy Run” July 12 as the first of its two summer shows.

The 24th season begins with this new historical drama written by Rennick Steele.

The Battle of Bushy Run, which took place near Harrison City, Westmoreland County, on Aug. 5 and 6, 1763, is told through this drama using a bare stage and actors.

The play takes the events of 1763 and transforms them into an evening in the theater while maintaining the facts of the battle.

The story centers on the men fighting in the region where some of their names remain visible, like Bouquet Street in Pittsburgh.

Curtain is at 7 p.m. July 12 to 14, 19 to 21, and 26 to 28 at the theater on the Steele Farm at 2498 White Cloud Road, two miles south of Freeport off Route 356.

The other play in the season is “Rivertown Firemen’s Jubilee” with music by Drew Fennell and book and direction by Steele. Show dates are 8 p.m. Aug. 16 to 18, 23 to 25, 30 and 31, and Sept. 1.

Tickets for either show are $15 for general admission, $12 for senior citizens and $10 for students.
