ELLWOOD CITY — Firefighters are mopping up after a fire at a metals recycling plant here.

Lawrence County emergency dispatchers said that a few firefighters remained at the scene about five hours after the blaze was first reported at the Inmetco plant in Ellwood City.

The fire was reported about 3:30 a.m. today and at least seven fire departments with 20 trucks responded.

Plant officials did not immediately return a call for comment, but authorities believe the blaze might have started when some batteries being stored for recycling overheated.

The plant recycles products containing metals including nickel-cadmium batteries, chromium and other potentially hazardous materials.

No injuries have been reported due to the fire.
