Fennell strikes again in North win
Jack Fennell is no stranger to big plays and big games, but he reached another level on Friday.
North Catholic’s senior rushed for 224 yards and scored six total touchdowns as the Trojans dismantled host Indiana, 42-6, in Greater Allegheny Conference play.
Fennell scored on runs of 22, 2, 56, 41 and 11 yards. He also reached the end zone on an 82-yard kickoff return.
North Catholic (5-4, 4-1) hosts Mars next Friday in a battle for the conference championship.
Union/A-C Valley 51, Ridgway 13 — In Rimersburg, the Falcon Knights exploded for 27 points in the fourth quarter to easily win this District 9 Region 2 game.
Brody Dittman passed for three touchdowns — to Zac Cooper (67 yards) and Trey Fleming (97 and 62).
The Falcon Knights (5-4) host Punxsutawney next Friday.
DuBois Area 36, Moniteau 0 — The Warriors (1-8, 0-7) dropped this road contest to the Beavers. No other details were available.
Laurel 30, Summit Academy 6 — The Knights (0-9, 0-5) were dominated by the host Spartans in a game stopped before halftime due to an altercation on the field.
Girls Volleyball
The WPIAL released its playoff brackets on Friday.
Seneca Valley is the No. 2 seed in Class 4A — behind North Allegheny — and drew a bye in the first round. The Raiders will host the Peters Township-Shaler winner on Thursday night.
North Catholic is the No. 2 seed in 3A — behind Hampton — and will host the Indiana-Plum winner on Oct.28. No. 8 seed Knoch plays No. 9 seed Montour at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hampton while No. 12 seed Mars takes on No. 5 seed South Fayette at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas Jefferson.
Freeport is the No. 1 seed in 2A and hosts the Charleroi-Hopewell winner at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Mars 3, Lincoln Park 0 — Ella Nicotra broke the single-season kills record for the Planets, who closed the regular season with this 25-7, 25-12, 25-12 victory on Thursday. Lilly Javor had six kills in the win, Hailey Duker 16 assists ad Emily Long 10 aces.
The Planets honored seniors Emma Balazentis, Long, Emma McCosby, Taylor Schmitt and Lillyanna Staines before the match.
