Swidzinski goes 5-under in WPIAL team golf final
Hunter Swidzinski carded a 5-under-par 67 to lead Butler to a runner-up finish at the WPIAL Class 3A boys golf team championship Thursday at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course.
It was the top individual effort out of 36 golfers. Also scoring for the Golden Tornado were Wyatt Kos (73), Boden Lenyk (73), Jase Renwick (81) and Blake Scott (84). The team finished with 378 strokes.
Peters Township won the WPIAL title with 371 strokes.
Girls Golf
Seneca Valley placed second in the WPIAL Class 3A team final with 351 strokes at Cedarbrook Red Golf Course.
Senior Lihini Ranaweera paced the Raiders with a plus-one 72 while teammates Madison Sharek (82), Sarah McCullough (96) and Rylin Banbe (101) rounded out the team’s top four.
Ranaweera’s effort tied Peters Township’s Brooke Vowcheck for the event’s best individual round.
Peters Township won the championship with 322.
Girls Tennis
Knoch advanced to the WPIAL Class 2A team semifinals with a 4-1 win over Winchester Thurston at Butler High School.
The top-seeded Knights will take on Hampton at 2 p.m. Friday at North Allegheny High School.
In the same tournament, North Catholic knocked off Beaver 3-2 in a match played at Cranberry Township Park.
The Trojanettes will face Sewickley Academy at 3 p.m. Friday at North Allegheny High School.
Girls Volleyball
Anora Robare led Slippery Rock with 32 assists as the Rockets swept Wilmington by scores of 25-13, 25-12, and 25-20. Avalee Demidovich had 10 kills, Molly Bissell eight kills, and Maddy Horner four aces. C.J. Sabo added three blocks.
Seneca Valley 3, North Hills 0 — The Raiders swept the Indians by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-11. No other details were available.
Moniteau 3, A-C Valley 0 — The Warriors topped the Falcons by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-16.
For the Falcons (3-12), Colleen Verostek had 11 digs, Maddy Dehart seven kills and Lexi Altman seven assists and 11 digs.
Moniteau stats were not submitted.
Clarion-Limestone 3, Karns City 0 — The Lions defeated the Gremlins (4-12) by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-16.
Ashley Mauer totaled 10 assists, five digs and four kills. Leah Wilson added four kills for KC.
Girls Soccer
Slippery Rock dispatched Grove City at home, 2-1, as Briell Jordan opened scoring and also notched an assist. Brooke Arblaster scored the difference-maker, while Aiva Reich helped on Jordan’s marker.
Karns City 4, Brookville 0 — Bree O'Donnell tallied two goals and one assist for the Gremlins (14-1-1).
Hanna Dailey added one goal and one assist, Sarah Dodd one goal. Savanna Prescott was in net for the shutout.
Boys Soccer
Behind multi-goal performances by Austin Friedline (4), Tony Lajevic (2), Mason Nebel (2), and Sam Caldwell (2), Knoch defeated Derry, 12-0.
Will Parisi and Lucas Christopher also deposited scores in the commanding win for the Knights.
Seneca Valley 2, North Allegheny 0 — In a game that decided the Section 1-4A title, the Raiders (13-0-3, 11-0-3) received goals early in the second half from Tyler Prex and Tyler Mazenec.
Both teams entered the night with section records of 10-0-3.
Karns City 2, Brookville — Colson Ritzert had both tallies for the Gremlins (11-4-1) while Adam Smith and Lathan Price both had an assist.
