Win at Rock would be golden for Rams
SLIPPERY ROCK — West Chester is winless — and hungry.
The Golden Rams (0-2) come to N. Kerr Thompson Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Slippery Rock University (2-0) Saturday night.
West Chester opened the season with a 31-0 loss to Delaware before suffering a frustrating 16-14 defeat to Edinboro last week.
"We don't even look at that Delaware game because they were outmanned," SRU defensive coordinator Shawn Lutz said. "The Edinboro game is a true measure of where they're at and they controlled play in that game.
"You turn the ball over a bunch of times, you're not going to beat anybody."
Eighth-year West Chester coach Bill Zwaan knows that as well as anybody.
The Golden Rams outgained Edinboro 398-204 in total yards, but the suffered five turnovers, including two inside the Fighting Scots 10-yard line.
"We lost that game the way most teams lose when they outgain they other team: penalties and turnovers," Zwaan said. "We have seven starters back offensively, including four linemen. We should be able to run the football. But we haven't."
De'Andre Webb and Jackson Fagan lead the Golden Rams ground attack with 48 and 45 yards rushing, respectively, after two games.
By comparison, Rock running backs Akeem Satterfield, Chris Darby and LaQuinn Stephens-Howling have rushed for 240, 144 and 107 yards thus far. Satterfield sat out SRU's 30-0 win at Cheyney last week with an ankle sprain and is listed as probable this week.
"Our offensive line has been blowing open holes that I could run through," SRU offensive coordinator Vic Campagna said. "We expect to run the football this week, too, but it will be more of a challenge.
"West Chester plays a 35 stack defense that puts eight players along the line of scrimmage. That's a defense designed to stop the run."
SRU quarterback Ryan Sabo has attempted only 36 passes in two games, completing 17. Twelve of his completions and all three of his touchdown passes have gone to Devin Goda.
Sophomore quarterback Mike Mattei has completed 31-of-59 passes for 389 yards, 321 coming against Edinboro. But he has been picked off seven times in two games.
Zach Sheridan leads The Rock with 16 tackles, including 12 solos. Andre Freeman and Aaron Nall have 12 and 11 tackles, respectively, and cornerback Robert Doiley has 3.5 tackles for loss.
Lutz said The Rock doesn't have a lot of depth on defense, "so our veteran guys have been outstanding at establishing a physical presence."
For Zwaan, it's all about getting a victory. The Golden Rams were preseason favorites to win the PSAC East.
The last time West Chester started 0-2 was 2006, when the team finished 9-4 and reached the Division II playoffs.
"We're not in panic mode, but we don't want to dig out of an 0-3 hole, either," Zwaan said.
Notes: Rock coach George Mihalik is seeking his 150th career victory and seventh 3-0 start. Mihalik is 41-18-2 against PSAC East teams, 11-3 since 2006. ... SRU's 2010 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees Randy McKavish, Heather Kearney, Jack Fullen, Mike Hambrick, Jack Fullen, Craig White and John Zack will be recognized at halftime.
