Former Butler girls hoops coach suing PIAA
FOX CHAPEL — Former Butler varsity girls basketball coach Jonna Burke, now at Shady Side Academy, has filed a lawsuit against the PIAA.
Burke was suspended for the upcoming season by the WPIAL over the summer for an alleged recruiting violation on social media. Burke and Shady Side Academy appealed the WPIAL decision to the PIAA, which voted 5-0 to uphold the suspension.
Shady Side Academy joined Burke in filing the suit, which was done Tuesday in federal court. The suit argues that Burke was denied due process during the WPIAL and PIAA proceedings, claiming neither the coach nor school were provided any written evidence, thus not giving the coach the opportunity to fairly defend herself.
The lawsuit is in request of a temporary injunction that would allow Burke to coach Shady Side Academy’s girls basketball team for the 2023-24 season.
This season would be Burke’s 25th as a high school head coach. She won 123 games in eight years at Butler before moving on to her alma mater, Bethel Park, where she coached 14 years. Her next season at Shady Side Academy will be her third at the school.
Burke celebrated her 500th career coaching win early in January. She could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
