Pitt collaborates with local library in public art project

The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, the Butler Area Public Library, and the owner of Mexico Lindo, an online Mexican folk art store, will team up to offer an “Alebrijes Workshop” at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the library.

Alebrijes are whimsical carvings depicting animals, people, objects and imaginary creatures painted with intense colors and intricate patterns, according to a news release from the library.

Each participant will receive a small, unfinished, hand-carved animal kit that includes paints and brushes.

Presenters will discuss the origins of the art form and answer questions as participants paint their alebrijes.

The workshop will be facilitated by Mexico Lindo’s owner, Lisa DiGioia Nutini, as well as Luz Amanda Hank and Howard Alvarez of the Center for Latin American Studies at Pitt.

Registration is required for the free event by calling the library at 724-287-1715.

The Alebrijes Workshop is presented as part of the Un Libro, Un Butler! series and is made possible through the support of the Robert E. & Helen Nixon Forsythe Foundation.
