When the trees leaf out, the tulips bloom and the Spring Garden Market comes to town, you know spring is here to stay.
The 15th annual Spring Garden Market and Home Show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Alameda Park in Butler Township.
The Master Gardeners and Butler County Parks and Recreation again have partnered to bring you plants, crafts, good eats, acoustic music with a little tae kwon do thrown in to put you in the mood for spending time outdoors.
Vendors will offer all sorts of plants, ornamental and edible. You’ll find vegetables, perennials, herbs, roses, shrubs — even small trees — to satisfy your gardening passion. Check out one-of-a-kind decorative and useful items for your home and garden from crafters.
Food vendors will offer culinary treats ranging from light snacks and sweets to meals.
Admission, parking and shuttle service to and from surrounding parking lots are free.
Specially planned activities and games allow the children to join the fun. Acoustic music and Garden Market radio complete the festive atmosphere.
Holly Shelter will again house the Master Gardeners’ plant sale.
This year, the Master Gardeners have partnered with Ken Metrick of Harvest View Farm to bring an unprecedented selection of flowering perennials. You’ll find native plants to help attract pollinators to your garden, along with unusual specimens not sold before.
If your flower gardening favors more traditional plants, take heart. There will be plenty of classic perennials offered also.
Master Gardeners will also have a selection of gardening gloves, along with T-shirts and sweatshirts decorated with outdoor advice and sayings.
Master Gardeners also can answer your gardening questions at the GreenLine table.
Butler County 4-H’ers will be available to help get your purchases to the car. You’ll know them by their bright green vests. There will be a place to keep your plant selections as you browse.
Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a basket raffle for a variety of vendor-donated items. Tickets are available at Pavilion No. 2.
Muddy Creek Band, a five-piece acoustic group from Slippery Rock will play from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Gazebo. They will cover classics from the 1970s through more modern selections. This versatile group will move from slow and bluesy through folk and bluegrass with a sprinkling of rock ‘n’ roll.
At 2:15 p.m., Master Connell’s Taekwondo Demo Team demonstrate martial arts techniques, weapons and board breaking, and present a brief comedy routine. Team members, range in age from 12 to 25.
Bring your children and grandchildren along. There will be free activities for youths of all ages at the Children’s Pavilion.
The kids might like their picture taken with Babe, the Blue Ox, the Butler BlueSox mascot. The Sox will have baseball-related children’s activities and season information available.
The YMCA plans face painting and the YMCA Youth and Sports Department will host mid-day games for youths.
Home Depot will have projects for building and taking home.
New this year, Beekeepers of ABCI, a group of beekeepers and bee enthusiasts from Armstrong, Butler, Clarion and Indiana counties, will talk to children about the importance of bees and pollinators. They will have samples of honey to taste and enjoy.
