HARRISONBURG, Va. — Butler graduate Annie Lowry, a senior women's soccer player at James Madison University, was named the school's co-Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Lowry has a 3.75 grade-point average as a business management major and art minor. She is a five-time dean's list honoree and a four-time Colonial Athletic Association academic honoree.
A four-year starter, Lowry is tied for sixth in team history with 29 goals and 74 points. She was a two-time first team all-conference player.
VERONA— Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith, members of St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, combined to shoot a 144 and to win the WPGA's 54th Fred Brand Foursomes Champions event Thursday.Knapp and Smith finished one stroke ahead of Pete Dellovade and Larry Lis of Rolling Hills.
CLARION — Special Olympics Pennsylvania will hold its annual Western Spring Sectional Sunday at Clarion University and Pinecrest Country Club.Nearly 500 athletes, including a Butler County contingent, will compete in aquatics, athletics, basketball, golf and tennis. PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh forward Sam Young, the Big East's most improved player last season, will return for his senior year.The 6-foot-7 Young weighed entering the NBA draft but, with two other starters back from last season's team that went 27-10, decided to finish his college career. Pitt also returns point guard Levance Fields and center DeJuan Blair.Young averaged 7.0 points as a sophomore, then was an all-Big East selection after averaging 18.1 points as a junior. He was chosen MVP of the Big East tournament as Pitt won four games in as many days to win the championship. The Panthers lost to Michigan State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
IRVING, Texas — Adam Scott, a deadline entrant into the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, shot a second-round 67 Friday to take the lead at 5-under 135.Scott was one-stroke ahead of fellow Aussies Mark Hensby (67) and Mathew Goggin (69), and Scott McCarron (66), who missed all of last season recovering from right elbow surgery.Scott began his round with four straight birdies. Though he managed only one more to go with two bogeys, that was enough to give the only one of the world's top 10 players at the Nelson sole possession of the lead.
MONTE CARLO, Monaco — Roger Federer rallied from a set down Friday to defeat David Nalbandian 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and advance to the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters tennis event.Federer remains on course for a third straight final against three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal, who beat No. 5 David Ferrer of Spain 6-1, 7-5.
