NEW YORK — Rangers forward Sean Avery was released from the hospital Sunday morning, five days after suffering a season-ending spleen injury in a playoff game.
Avery was in intensive care at St. Vincent's Medical Center from the time he was admitted Tuesday night, shortly after New York's Game 3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, until Saturday because of a lacerated spleen, Rangers spokesman John Rosasco said.
He left the hospital just hours before the Rangers lost to Pittsburgh 3-2 in overtime and were eliminated from the playoffs.
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Paula Creamer squandered another late lead and fell into a playoff she didn't want. She got the result she desperately needed, beating Juli Inkster on the second extra hole Sunday in the SemGroup Championship.A week after losing to Annika Sorenstam in a playoff, Creamer bogeyed the 18th hole at Cedar Ridge for the third straight day and wound up in overtime when the 47-year-old Inkster, trying to become the oldest LPGA Tour winner, made an 18-foot birdie putt.Creamer twice gave herself birdie putts in the playoff, making one at No. 10 for the win.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Anthony Kim became the youngest PGA Tour winner in six years, cruising to a five-shot win over Ben Curtis in the Wachovia Championship.With Tiger Woods home recovering from knee surgery and unable to defend his title at Quail Hollow Club, the 22-year-old Kim turned in a performance that brought comparisons to Woods.Entering the day with a four-shot lead, Kim birdied the first hole and was never threatened on his way to a 3-under 69.
AUSTIN, Texas — Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson was charged with failing a sobriety test while operating a 30-foot boat, then resisting arrest before being hit with pepper spray and dragged ashore by officers.Benson faces charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest after the incident Saturday night on Lake Travis, Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman Roger Wade said.Benson was released from jail early Sunday on a $14,500 bond. The charges are class B misdemeanors, each punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine. A call to Benson's agent was not immediately returned.
BARCELONA, Spain — Rafael Nadal won his fourth straight Barcelona Open title with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over second-seeded David Ferrer in the final Sunday.Nadal's 21st straight win at the tournament improved his record to 20-1 in clay court finals, including 4-0 at Barcelona. The second-ranked Spaniard, who has won 103 of his last 104 matches on clay, improved to 25-8 in finals overall.Nadal moved to 6-3 against the fifth-ranked Ferrer, whom he beat on his way to a fourth straight trophy at Monte Carlo last week.
