Rough start for Scoop

Last week wasn’t my finest as a pigskin prognosticator.

The first week of the high school football season is always a tricky one. And it certainly tricked me.

I went 6-4 — one of the worst records I have ever posted. The good news is it’s early and I have lots of time to recover.

Just like some of the local football teams who stumbled out of the gate.

Here we go. Week 2: redemption time.

Butler 27, Shaler 10 — The Golden Tornado were one of the teams who got off to a rough start.

Butler is ripe for a rebound this week.

Knoch 22, Trinity 12 — The Knights got off to a poor start as well, falling behind Greensburg Salem 20-0 at the half before making it a game in the final two quarters in a 20-14 setback.

Knoch will also bounce back this week.

Mars 49, Derry 11 — This should be a legend ... wait for it ... Derry win for the Planets.

Ford City 30, Freeport 9 — The Yellowjackets got swatted by Kittanning last week at home.

Freeport is home again this week, desperate for a win before some tough road games.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be a long night and a long season for the ‘Jackets.

Karns City 27, Clarion 22 — The Gremlins rolled in their opener and face a stiff road challenge this week against a Bobcat team that put up a 74-burger against Clarion-Limestone.

Karns City is the real deal and it will prove it this week.

West Middlesex 28, Moniteau 14 — The Warriors are still adjusting to their new offense.

Union 22, Punxsutawney 21 — Don’t sleep on the Golden Knights. That’s the lesson learned not only from Week 1 but from the last two seasons.

That program is established now and Union will notch a huge win over the Chucks.

A-C Valley 16, Clay-Battelle 15 — The Cee Bees not only have a cool nickname, they have game as well.

They are a small West Virginia school, though, and I have a feeling A-C Valley will even its record with a tough win.

Slippery Rock 37, Meadville 19 — Quarterback Jake Whitmer is 2-for-2 for 92 yards and two touchdowns this season for Slippery Rock.

In case you were wondering, that’s a perfect quarterback rating.

Whitmer may need to throw more against Meadville this week. He won’t have to be perfect with the talent around him.

Grove City 22, Wilmington 16 — Another big game this week, the Eagles get a showdown with the Greyhounds.

Grove City will eke this one out.

Summit Academy 33, Waynesburg 12 — Consider me on the Knights’ bandwagon after a mercy-rule win last week.

Scoop’s .600 winning percentage is still better than the Pirates.
