ST. LOUIS — Cardinals manager Tony La Russa took a flight from his West Coast home to St. Louis on Sunday for further talks about his future. There was a report, too, Mark McGwire might join him as a coach.

The Cardinals scheduled a news conference for Monday morning but did specify why.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on its Web site that the news conference would announce that La Russa had agreed to a 15th season. The newspaper also said the manager was negotiating with McGwire to be the team's batting coach.

The Post-Dispatch said Cardinals notified current hitting coach, Hal McRae, last week that it would not renew his contract after five seasons.

NEW YORK — Boise State got bumped. TCU is now in position to be this season's BCS buster — for now.The Horned Frogs passed the Broncos on Sunday in the Bowl Championship Series standings, with TCU jumping two spots from last week and Boise State falling three.Florida (.9726), Alabama (.9450) and Texas (.8927) held onto the top three spots. All are on course to reach the national championship game if they can remain undefeated. The Gators and Crimson Tide, Nos. 1 and 2 in the AP poll, could meet in the Southeastern Conference title game.Unbeaten Iowa (.8249) moved up two spots to fourth place after beating Michigan State 15-13 with a last-play touchdown pass by Ricky Stanzi.Fifth-place USC (.7944) also moved up two spots.TCU (.7890) is sixth, a spot ahead of Boise State (.7752).

Lexie Mastro scored the game's lone goal as the Mars girls soccer team upended host Upper St. Clair, 1-0 in a WPIAL Class AAA play-in game on Saturday.Mars' defense, led by Erica Sullivan, Sarah Williams, Erin Resosky and Jordyn White, limited the Panthers to just seven shots on goal.The Planets (15-3-1) will travel to Peters Township (15-1-2) for a first round battle at 6 p.m. Tuesday.Knoch's season came to an end Saturday with a 4-0 loss at Center in a WPIAL Class AA first round playoff game.No other details were available.

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau running back James Shope has been named RRR Roadhouse D9.com Player of the Week.Shope had 30 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns in the Warriors' 22-21 triumph over Karns City. He also owns the school's career rushing and touchdown records.
