IN BRIEF
MADRID — Rafael Nadal won a record 18th Masters title by beating Roger Federer 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the Madrid final.
Nadal reversed the result of the 2009 final — the last time the pair had played against each other — to win in Madrid for a second time and move one Masters title ahead of Andre Agassi and two in front of Federer.
In the women's final, Venus Williams was beaten 6-2, 7-5 by unseeded Aravane Rezai.
MANCHESTER, England — American sprinter Tyson Gay broke a 44-year-old record for 200 meters run on a straight track as part of his drive to challenge Usain Bolt for sprint supremacy.Gay ran 19.41 seconds into a slight headwind on a specially constructed track, shaving 0.09 off the mark Tommie Smith set in May 1966 at San Jose, Calif.
COLOGNE, Germany — Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings had a hat trick, Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin added his fifth goal in five games and unbeaten Russia cruised into the ice hockey world championship quarterfinals with a 6-1 victory over Denmark. The United States earned its second straight shutout with Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno scoring twice and Brandon Dubinsky of the New York Rangers adding a goal and two assists in a 4-0 victory over France in the relegation round.
MIAMI — Florida International's Garrett Wittels has a 45-game hitting streak, tying the third-longest in NCAA Division I history.Wittels singled in the fourth inning of FIU's game against South Alabama, matching the 45-game streak Roger Schmuck of Arizona State put together in 1971.Wittels has a hit in every game in which he's had an at-bat this season.Only two others have had longer streaks in Division I play: Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura (58) in 1987 and Wichita State's Phil Stephenson (47) in 1981.
BALTIMORE — Bob Baffert was still smiling and laughing the morning after winning his first Triple Crown race in eight years. As Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky prepared to walk onto a van leaving Pimlico on Sunday, Baffert petted the bay colt on the neck and told him, "Thank you so much."Horse racing, however, is not quite so buoyant — the sport remains without a Triple Crown champion since 1978. And the winners of this year's first two Triple Crown races — Super Saver in the Kentucky Derby and Lookin At Lucky — are skipping the Belmont.
