Man jumps from bridge during pursuit by police

PITTSBURGH — A Western Pennsylvania man is in the hospital after jumping off a Pittsburgh-area bridge while fleeing from police.

Police allege 24-year-old John Paul Obritz stole a few cartons of cigarettes from a CVS near the city. Police said they caught sight of Obritz fleeing the store when employees chased after him.

Police said Obritz jumped off the McKees Rocks Bridge when they flashed their lights at him, signaling him to pull over. Obritz jumped after tossing the cartons of cigarettes over the bridge.

Police said Obritz has been apprehended. Police said Obritz's injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
