Velma J. Baxter
Velma J. Baxter, 80, of Butler passed away at 10 a.m. Saturday.
She was born Jan. 25, 1935, in Butler, the daughter of the late Frank Slupe and Dora (Wise) Slupe.
Velma was retired from the Kroger Co., where she was a front end supervisor. She was also a former employee of the A&P Co. She was loved and cherished by her co-workers.
She was a member of Summit Presbyterian Church, where she was a former deacon and elder. She also taught fifth grade Sunday school for many years. Velma was a past worthy matron for the Order of Easter Star, Chapter 45, and the White Shrine of Jerusalem.
She was an avid card player and a member of a 50-year card club with her fondest of friends. Velma was always helping others in need.
Surviving are her son, Joseph W. Baxter and his wife, Phyllis, of Palm Desert, Calif.; her daughter, Tammy J. Hassler and her husband, Steven, of Butler; eight grandchildren, Philip, Daryl, Carlyn, Logan, Hunter, Heath, Hannah and Hallee; one great-grandchild, Porter; her brother, Charles Slupe and his wife, Elaine, of Winchester, Va.; a number of nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Baxter and Ronald Baxter and his wife, Cleo, all of Butler; and three sisters-in-law, Carole Slupe of Huntsville, Ala., Rose Ann Slupe of Lyndora and Jean Baxter of Butler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Baxter, who she married March 31, 1956; and her brothers, Frank and George Slupe.
BAXTER — Friends of Velma J. Baxter, who died Saturday, March 28, 2015, will be received at Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.Services will be at Summit Presbyterian Church, 181 Caldwell Dr., Butler, at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Tom Jones officiating.
