Butler XC sweeps PR, splits with Seneca

Ava Brewster and Drew Griffith placed first overall for Butler’s girls and boys, respectively, in Tuesday’s tri-meet against visiting Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley.

Brewster came in with a time of 21 minutes, 26.21 seconds. Griffith finished in 17:12.36.

Butler’s boys defeated Pine-Richland (21-40) and SV (26-29). The Raiders were paced by Max Smith’s fourth-place effort.

In the girls event, Seneca Valley topped the Rams (20-40) and Golden Tornado (27-28), with Sydney Heltzell placing third overall for the Raiders.

Butler beat P-R by a score of 19-41.

Ben Brestensky finished with a top time of 18:22 and teammate Michael Braun was just one second behind as Freeport’s boys earned wins over Burrell (17-46) and Aquinas Academy (17-44).

For Freeport’s girls, Grace Kristine placed second overall to spark wins over Burrell (16-44) and Aquinas (20-42).

Runners from Apollo-Ridge and St. Joseph also competed in the meet.

Slippery Rock lost both meets against Grove City, the boys by a 15-50 score and the girls by a final of 18-41.

Kasey Yeager placed third to lead SR’s girls with a time of 22:06.

Boys Soccer

Butler’s Thomas Sheptak had two goals and Chris Rubcic added one goal to lift the Golden Tornado to a 3-0 victory over Shaler.

Christian Mortimer had two assists and Alex Lourens had one assist. Drew Knight earned the shutout.

Butler is now 4-2-1 overall and 3-2 in section play.

Freeport 3, Greensburg Salem 0 — Mark Caruso, Eli Hassler and Vinnie Porco each scored a goal for the Yellowjackets (2-4).

Assists went to Xavier DeWitt (2) and Carson Rowley while Judah Thompson earned the shutout with four saves.

Shady Side Academy 4, Knoch 2 — Mason Nebel and Sam Caldwell scored for the Knights (3-5, 3-2) while Kannon Trofimuk dished out two assists.

Boys Golf

Mars placed second at the MAC tournament at Fox Run Golf Course, tallying 225 points. Moon won the tourney with 217.

Lukas Singh shot a 71 for the Planets while James Kinghorn and Matt Mueller both shot 77. All three golfers placed in the top 10, with Singh finishing runner-up.

KSAC — Moniteau placed third out of nine teams at a Mega Match held at Wanango Country Club. The Warriors tallied 237 strokes, led by a 45 from Chason Delarosa-Rugg. Also scoring for the Warriors were Corbin Fallen (46), Carson Minear (47), Dawson Wallace (48) and Keegan Book (51).

Karns City received a 45 from Chloe Fritch and a 46 from Joey O'Donnell.

For A-C Valley/Union, Joe Rapp and Hudson Bliss both carded a 45.

Clarion’s Devon Lauer shot 35 to top the field and the Bobcats won as a team with 201 strokes.

Butler 187, North Hills 226 — The Golden Tornado continued their strong campaign with this victory at Slippery Rock Golf Club.

Wyatt Kos (35), Hunter Swidzinski (37) and Jase Renwick (38) led the way for the Tornado (9-2, 6-2).

Kasey Toia paced the Indians with a 38.

Girls Golf

Moniteau tallied 141 points to top win the KSAC Mega Match. Union/A-C Valley was second with 173.

The Warriots had the top three scores as Mariska Shunk sghot a 43, Kendall Sankey a 48 and Sammie Smith a 50. Ruby Watson of Union/ACV shot a 51 for fourth place. Moniteau’s Juliette Brown carded a 55.

Butler 205, Kiski Area 256 — The Golden Tornado improved to 7-5 overall and 5-4 in section matches.

Paige Ponteous carded a 45 to lead Butler.

Girls Tennis

Butler won all three singles matches in defeating Shaler, 3-2, on Monday.

Girls Volleyball

Maddy Dehart tallied eight kills, eight digs and two blocks Tuesday, but A-C Valley (2-2) dropped a 3-1 decision to North Clarion. Match scores were 25-23, 25-19, 15-23, 25-14.

Bella Ielase had five kills, 12 digs and 16 service points for the Falcons. Lexi Altman contributed 14 assists. A-C Valley plays at Karns City on Thursday.

Mars 3, Ambridge 0 — Hailey Duker’s 21 assists helped the Planets sweep the Bridgers by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-16.

Tallying kills in the win were Ella Nicotra (10), Lily Javor (6) and Cecilia Christy (5).

Slippery Rock 3, Reynolds 0 — Playing at home, the Rockets earned this victory by scores of 25-10, 25-22 and 25-13.

Anora Robare had 25 assists in the win, Avalee Demidovich tallied 10 kills and C.J. Sabo four blocks.

Lexi Plesakov had nine digs to lead the defense.
