SHELOCTA — State police say an 82-year-old Western Pennsylvania man was killed by a tractor that rolled on top of him and dragged him down a hill.

Troopers tell the Leader-Times of Kittanning that Alfred Adams died at the scene, a farm in Plumcreek Township.

Police say Adams was sharpening the blades of an antique tractor before mowing the grass when the tractor, which was running and in gear, fell down onto him about 11 a.m. Friday.

Police say Adams had propped the deck of the mower up on a bucket. The tractor fell off the bucket and dragged Adams beneath the tractor and down a slope about 30 yards.

Ex-officer will face prostitution trialPITTSBURGH — A former Pittsburgh police officer will stand trial on prostitution charges his attorney contends are based on “guilt by association.”Michael Johns, 45, was ordered to trial after a preliminary hearing Friday.Johns was arrested last August after investigators said he paid for rental cars for the women, helped them obtain drugs and allowed them to use his home computer to post online ads. Some earlier charges were dropped before he was re-charged last month.Johns resigned from the department last year.Defense attorney Marc Daffner says Johns is hoping to put the charges behind him and move out of state.Johns is the third former city officer to face prostitution charges in recent months. Talib Ghafoor and Faquar Holland were sentenced to probation in April after pleading no contest.

New commissary to serve PittsburghCORAOPOLIS — Ground has been broken on new stores to serve about 170,000 active, retired and reserve military members and their families within a 100-mile radius of Pittsburgh.The new facilities under construction Friday will be built along Interstate 376 in Moon Township, about 10 miles west of the city.The plan approved by the military last year calls for a 43,000-square-foot supermarket, or commissary, and a 10,000-square-foot department store, or post exchange.The new stores ensure Pittsburgh-area military families won’t have to drive to Dayton, Ohio or Carlisle, the next closest locations for similar facilities.The Defense Department announced in 2005 it was closing the Charles E. Kelly Military Support Facility in Oakdale.
