Homeowner, firefighters prevent blaze from spreading

DONEGAL TWP — A quick-acting homeowner and firefighters prevented a fire Thursday night from spreading beyond the roof of a garage on Matthew Lane.

Chief Jason Miller of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department said the property owner, Victor Bauldoff Jr., saw the fire from his house and grabbed a hose to stop the flames from extending beyond the roof of the wooden structure.

“The homeowner was able to slow down the fire with a garden hose,” Miller said.

He credited Bauldoff for acting quickly because the house is fewer than 100 feet from the garage.

After receiving the 10:58 p.m. 911 call to 116 Matthew Lane, volunteer firefighters arrived there within minutes and doused the blaze.

“It was all contained to the roof,” Miller said.

He said the apparent cause was the hot metal vent pipe of the chimney igniting the wood.

He estimated damage to the garage at $10,000.

Bauldoff is insured.

More than 20 firefighters responded. The Petrolia, East Butler and Lick Hill volunteer fire departments assisted Chicora.

Crews cleared the scene by 12:30 a.m. today.
