CLARION — The Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Clarion has been renamed for a soldier who saved four others by throwing himself on a grenade during the Iraq war.
Post 2145 is named for Spc. Ross McGinnis of Knox.
The 19-year-old soldier was posthumously promoted from private and awarded the Silver Star for heroism. The Army credits him with saving the lives of the other soldiers by covering the grenade tossed into his Humvee on Dec. 4, 2006 in Baghdad. McGinnis enlisted in the Army on his 17th birthday, which happens to be Flag Day, June 14.
PLUM — Dominion Peoples has agreed to replace most of the main gas line on a street where a house exploded last week, killing one man and injuring his granddaughter.Spokesman Elmore Lockley says the gas company is trying to determine how much of the line will be replaced.He says Dominion Peoples also will check service lines into homes and consider paying to replace damaged lines.A National Transportation and Safety Board investigator says the house exploded Wednesday when gas from a broken two-inch line seeped into the building. The explosion killed 64-year-old Richard Leith of Trafford and injured his 4-year-old granddaughter, Gianna Pettinato.
HARMARVILLE — PennDOT will briefly close Route 28 and another nearby road on Thursday when it tests blasting equipment that will be used to prevent landslides along the highway in Harmar Township.The highway and nearby Freeport Road will be closed for about 15 minutes at 11 a.m.PennDOT plans to remove part of the hillside and build a protective fence.
