Butler Township requests construction bids for projects

BUTLER TWP — Commissioners are calling for contractors to revamp the intersection of Hansen Avenue, Whitestown Road and Armco Drive, and for contractors to begin phase one of the recreation complex project, starting with the concession and restroom facilities.

Tom Knights, Butler Township manager, said at the commissioners meeting Monday, Aug. 21, that the commissioners could vote to award bids for the recreation complex in October, while contracts for the road project could be voted on in November.

Knights said the complexity of the road project could require more time for companies to put together bids.

“How extensive it is and how it encompasses just about every part of road construction there is, there’s going to be ample amount of time for bidders,” Knights said.

The plan for the intersection across the Picklegate Bridge includes a realignment of Armco Drive and some left-turning lanes to make exiting that road easier to navigate, according to Knights. The intersection is planned to resemble a cross.

The township is also in the process of creating a recreation complex near Pullman Business Park. The first phase involves the installation of an artificial turf field near the Butler Transit Authority office that will come with soccer, lacrosse and football markings. There also will be a parking lot with 68 spaces, which Knights said is slated to contain four chargers for electric vehicles.

Commissioner Ed Natale said in the meeting that the intersection reconstruction is long overdue, and Dave Zarnick, chairman of the commissioners, agreed.

“I’m very excited to see this project move forward,” Zarnick said. “It’ll be really nice to get that intersection fixed up the way it should be.”
