Zelie man suspected again of huffing can
ZELIENOPLE — Just five days after he passed out — twice in the same night — from huffing canned gas, a borough man again was arrested for inhaling chemical vapors to get high.
Zelienople police said they caught 42-year-old Allen M. Gruver huffing a canister of compressed gas duster about 12:25 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of his apartment on North Main Street.
The suspect was “stumbling around” and unaware that officers were there, police said.
A Harmony EMS crew arrived and gave him a quick check up before police took him back to the station.
Gruver was later arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of inhaling toxic-releasing substances and a summary charge of public drunkenness.
He was placed in Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.
Less than a week earlier police had caught Gruver for a similar incident
On April 5, according to court documents, he passed out about 8:30 p.m. on North Main Street near the Citizens Bank branch.
By the time officers found Gruver, he was standing in a business parking lot near his apartment with a canister of duster in his hand.
The officers helped him to his apartment and told him he would be receiving charges in the mail.
But an hour later, police again saw Gruver after they were called for an unresponsive man behind a drugstore on South Main Street. He was “actively inhaling a can of gas duster,” documents said, when police found him.
He was booked on huffing-related charges and taken to the county prison long enough to get sober. He was then released on his own recognizance.
Gruver admitted that he is addicted to compressed gas duster and huffs at least a full can every day.
