Lucy Courtney

Lucy Blair Courtney, 86, formerly of Eau Claire, passed away peacefully Monday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following a four-year battle with dementia.

She was born on Oct. 9, 1927, in Osborne, Pa., Cherry Township, the daughter of the late Thomas Costa Sr. and Anna (Massaro) Costa.

Lucy was a full-time mother and homemaker. She loved her hobbies of cooking, baking, gardening and spending time with her family. She especially loved being “grandma” to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a former employee of Sportspal, Inc. of Emlenton, and also worked in food service at Slippery Rock University for several years, being assigned to the Weisenpflugh Dining Hall.

Lucy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Butler, where she served as a greeter in years past and was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class. She was an avid Steelers fan. She also never knew a stranger and always fed anyone who came to her home. Her hands were never still, always ready to help anyone in need.

Lucy was the wife of the late Dean R. Blair, who she married on Oct. 15, 1949. They were married for 27 years until his death on June 13, 1977. She later married G. Ray Courtney of Mercer who passed away on July 25, 1998.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, John (Lynee) Blair of Greer, S.C.; her two daughters, Marcy (Donald) Jervis of Rochester, Ind., and Darcy (Larry) Thompson of Butler; her stepchildren, Mark (Debbie) Courtney, Bruce (Holly) Courtney and Carol Courtney, all of Mercer; her five grandchildren; and her seven great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her five sisters, Josephine Turk, Clara Wimberly and Rose Majeroni, all of Erie, Rebecca Oravecz of Hilliards and Genevieve Chernick of Butler; and her two brothers, Samuel Costa of Butler and Thomas Costa Jr. of Eau Clair.

Preceding her in death were her two sisters, Lena Turk and Mary Hilliard, and her two brothers, Carmen Costa and John Costa.

Lucy's family would like to thank all the medical, nursing and care giving staff at Sunnyview and at Butler Memorial Hospital for their years of dedicated and thoughtful care.

Courtney — The friends of Lucy Blair Courtney, who passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, will be received at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 6 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 7 p.m. Wednesday with pastor David Johnson of the First Baptist Church, Grove City, officiatingInterment will be in the North Washington Cemetery.For more information, go to www.youngfuneralhomes.com.
