WINFIELD TWP — A fire Sunday evening destroyed a shed near an abandoned mobile home on Maplecrest Drive.

The state police fire marshal’s office is reportedly investigating what started the blaze shortly before 6 p.m., authorities said.

Firefighters from Winfield, Saxonburg and Buffalo Township answered the call and found the 10-foot-by-20-foot shed engulfed in flames when they got there.

Fire crews immediately turned their focus to the vacant mobile home that was nearby and was in jeopardy of catching fire.

Firefighters were able to save the trailer from any fire damage. However, a tarp-style garage, also nearby, had heat damage.

A damage estimate was not available and the property owner’s name was not immediately known. Crews noted they found debris in the shed following the fire but it was not known what contents were destroyed.

Officials also did not know how long the home had been abandoned. There apparently were no utilities connected to it.

Firefighters remained at the scene for a little more than an hour.
