Change in store after losses
SLIPPERYROCK — Greg Jelks has seen enough.
The Slippery Rock Sliders manager promised major changes Wednesday night following a 9-3, 5-0 doubleheader loss to the Evansville (Ind.) Otters at Critchfield Park.
The twin defeats extended the Sliders' losing streak to seven games.
"I've been patient enough,"Jelks said. "We have too many guys who just haven't proven they can hit the ball at this level.
"I've given them plenty of opportunities. It's obvious we're not going to hit the ball, so I'm going to go get some hitters.
"Sometime in the next five days, I'll have a bunch of new hitters here. How many will depend on how many trades I can make,"Jelks added.
The Sliders entered Wednesday's twinbill last in the Frontier League with a .220 team batting average. They have scored only 84 runs, at least 40 fewer than every other team in the league.
Slippery Rock's 8-19 record is the worst in the circuit as well.
"Our lack of hitting has begun to affect our pitchers,"Jelks said. "That's why I have to do something. I can't wait any longer. These guys feel like they have to make perfect pitches all the time, and you can't play this game like that."
The Sliders are fourth in the league with a 4.23 team earned run average, but have surrendered 39 runs during their current seven-game skid.
Slippery Rock managed only six hits in the doubleheader. The offense hit a season-low in the nightcap, collecting only two hits as Evansville pitcher Justin Jordan faced just one batter over the minimum.
A recent Class AApitcher in the Seattle Mariners system, Jordan threw only 79 pitches, 56 for strikes. The Sliders' only two baserunners came on a Phil Butch single in the first inning and a two-out double by Steve Hudson in the third.
Butch was picked off first to end the opening frame.
"I know all about Jordan and I can't take anything away from him,"Jelks said. "Sometimes you have to tip your cap to the opposition and he was simply outstanding."
Evansville manager Jeff Pohl was Jelks' pitching coach for the past five years with the Otters.
"Justin is nothing fancy out there" Pohl said. "He knows how to move his fastball in and out and he throws strikes. He knows how to pitch."
"Greg will get things going over there,"Pohl added. "Everyone's in the same boat in this league right now. All the teams are trying to find the right mix. There's a long way to go.
Jelks tried everything to jump-start his offense Wednesday night. His former leadoff hitter, Jarrod Klausman, batted in the fourth spot. He started three catchers in the second game — Mike Darrah behind the plate, D.J. Dixon at DH and Bryan Vickers at first base.
He even sent pitching coach Adam Shafer out to coach third during the Sliders' final inning at the plate.
"I'll try anything to get something started,"Jelks said.
During the past week, the Sliders have released six players and signed five others.
That could be nothing compared to what's coming.
"I've got my network in place,"Jelks said. "I've got five scouts out there searching for talent. We'll look at players recently released by major league organizations and maybe get more experience in here.
"Trades will be made. It's not an easy process, but we'll find some bats."
When asked if some of his more talented pitchers may be dealt, Jelks replied:"You have to trade something good to get something good."
