Metcalfe facing GOP challenger

Marburger seeks seat

In a busy election year, voters got a clearer picture Tuesday of the names they will see on their ballots.

At the deadline for candidates to submit nominating petitions, all state legislators are seeking re-election.

Most are unopposed, but some have competition, according to an online database of nomination petitions kept by the Pennsylvania Department of State.

All of Pennsylvania’s 203-member House are up for election this year, including seven who represent parts of Butler County.

Incumbent Republican Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, is the only state lawmaker in the county facing a challenge in the April 26 primary. Gordon Marburger of Adams Township is running against Metcalfe.

Two years ago the pair also faced off for the 12th district’s Republican nomination. However, Marburger had to rely on write-in votes after two registered voters successfully challenged Marburger’s candidacy in a case that was decided by the state Supreme Court.

That court ordered his name off the primary ballot, citing his failure to file a financial interest statement form with the state Ethics Commission.

Marburger had filed the form with the Department of State, but not with the Ethics Commission, a step he said he was unaware he needed to take.

While Marburger got 2,731 write-in votes, he still fell 540 votes short of Metcalfe’s total for the Republican nomination.

Metcalfe went on to beat Democrat challenger Lisa Zucco in the general election.

This year the winner will face Democrat Christian Rieger of Cranberry Township in the Nov. 8 election. Reiger is running unopposed in his party’s primary.

Incumbent Democrat Jaret Gibbons, D-10th, is running unopposed in his party’s primary, but in November he will face the winner of a crowded GOP primary race. Republican hopefuls Aaron Bernstine, Dawnlyn Valli and Clifford Glover have filed for their party’s nomination for that seat.

Uncontested races for the state’s General Assembly will dominate the April and November elections. Incumbent representatives Tedd Nesbit, R-8th; Brian Ellis, R-11th; Jeff Pyle, R-60th; R. Lee James, R-64th; and Jim Marshall, R-14th, all are running unopposed.

Half of Pennsylvania’s 50-member Senate also is up for election, including three state senators representing portions of the county.

Incumbent Republican Sen. Don White, R-41st, is running unopposed in April’s primary, but will be challenged in November by Democratic candidate Anthony DeLoreto, who is running unopposed in his party’s primary.

Incumbent GOP Sens. Scott Hutchinson, R-21st, and Elder Vogel Jr., R-47th, are running unopposed in the primary and general elections.

U.S. Congressman Mike Kelly, R-3rd, also is running for re-election unopposed in the primary and general election, according to the database.

The last day to register to vote in the primary is March 28. The last day to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 11.
