SLIPPERY ROCK— Two Slippery Rock Sliders pitchers, right-handed reliever Jared Simon and left-handed starter Dan Schwartz, have signed with the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

Simon was 1-1 with six saves in 22 appearances for the Sliders, striking out 23, walking two and limiting opposing hitters to a .193 batting average.

Schwartz was 2-5 with a 4.17 earned run average in 69 innings.

A total of three Sliders have moved on to affiliated baseball. Former Sliders right-handed pitcher Pete Parise signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in June.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team clinched the PSAC West title with a 2-0 win over Clarion Thursday.Meghan McGrath and Danielle Cooper each scored goals and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren McManus tallied her third shutout for The Rock (13-3-1, 7-1-1).

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Michael Allen gave his hometown gallery plenty to cheer about Thursday, matching his career-low round with a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead in the Fry's Electronics Open.Nick Watney, Rich Beem and Frank Lickliter II were two strokes back, with Lickliter posting the day's only bogey-free round on Grayhawk's Raptor Course.
